Chapter 28

I curled around Po on my narrow bed. Though he enjoyed being in charge during sex, he liked being the little spoon.

After three days of planning and prepping, we were back on the Firebrand and flying away from Star Keeper. The sound of her engines as we soared through hyperspace was as familiar as my own breath. This cabin was where I had spent long-haul smuggling missions. Then, it had been a personal haven, a private den. Someone else being here still felt strange, like the touch of a sexy stranger. Not entirely bad, but weird because it was different.

I buried my face in Po’s thick, kinky hair and breathed deeply of his sandalwood scent. In a few days, we’d part ways, and I didn’t know for how long—or if I would be coming back at all.

“I’ll be back. I promise,” I said, as I had many times over the last few days. It felt awful because it was a promise I might not be able to keep. If Antares, Hamal, and I were cornered on Zertanih, a world with eight million royal guards, escape and survival would be impossible.

Polaris shuddered against me and said nothing. I suspected he knew my promise was empty.

He was terrified for his sister, and now I was leaving him on a dangerous mission too. But this was how we’d end the war. Then Po would never risk losing anyone again. No one would.

“If something goes wrong, I don’t think I can help,” he whispered. “I’ve never hacked the Supremacy firewalls. No one has. You’ll be alone.” He sniffed.

I could handle danger alone. Instead, I said, “I won’t be. Antares and Hamal will be there, and I know you, Orion, and Rux will bail us out.” I repressed a shudder so he wouldn’t feel it. If they tried to save us, they’d likely be caught. I had a plan for that, but Polaris wouldn’t like it, so I wasn’t going to tell him.

More lying to my crew and boyfriends, but Orion and Po would break down if they knew the truth. The best thing I could do for them was to make this mission a success and stop the Supremacy. As long as the war raged, they’d never be safe or happy. If I could help end it, we wouldn’t have to lie or risk our lives anymore.

Polaris squeezed my wrist where it rested against his stomach. That meant he wanted to get up. I pulled my arm back, and he swung his feet onto the floor, rubbing his eyes. “I’ll get back to studying firewalls and Supremacy code—”

“You know everything about firewalls and the computer codes that humans can read.”

“If I did, I could hack the Supremacy’s main computers.” Polaris shot me a small, forced smile that didn’t reach his twilight eyes. He looked so tired. No wonder, when he had been analyzing code until he collapsed from exhaustion at the Firebrand’s console. “There has to be a way in…. No one has
